Was it a savvy move by the GOP congressional campaign committee to build websites resembling those of Democratic candidates to raise money to defeat those same candidates? Or was it a deceitful effort to confuse donors? Or perhaps just a typical juvenile political stunt?
Ultimately, it’s in the eye of the beholder, but here’s what CNN reports:
At least 15 websites that appear to be official campaign sites for Democratic candidates, are actually the handiwork of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
In an effort to improve their online efforts this election season, the NRCC’s digital team came up with what the group believes is a great idea: get out the Republican message through fake Democrat sites.
The NRCC didn’t back away from the project in the wake of CNN’s report. NRCC spokesman Daniel Scarpinato said, “we are very proud of this program.”
